My new addiction is AMC’s Mad Men. It is a stylish series set in the 60’s at a New York Madison Avenue advertising firm. The clothes in the show look great and are even influencing the runways of Michael Kors and Peter Som. Cigarettes and whiskey are ubiquitous, I mean, it is everywhere. The...

Get your tummy ready for something great. The hardest working waiter in Detroit opens his own restaurant on Monday, February 4. The doors of Eph Mcnally’s on Porter Street closed but Greg Mudge could not pass the opportunity to keep the venue open. With new menu and new paint, Mudgies will bring something fresh...

Yesterday, John and I met a guy named Mark who opened a little cafe near my home.
His cozy little shop, The San Marcos Lucas Cafe, has the feel of a small art gallery.
After lunch and a bit of conversation, we began to like this character and so decided to build a webspace for him at...

Eric, the drummer for my band, The Exceptions posted his favorite scotch on myspace. Wine is my favorite leisure liquid. (Type ‘wine’ in the Search box for my posts). My buddy Bill has been making his own micro beer and I’m a pretty good lab rat for him. I got turned on to whisky...

Last winter, the doors closed on a venue that was eclectic, eccentric and all things Detroit. Oslo opened in 2004 and quickly became the place to be and be seen. In one venue, you could eat great sushi dishes and break a sweat to hot-ass underground DJs.
Well, have no fear kiddies. Oslo re-opens tonight,...

We enjoy reading the Pioneer Woman and just discovered her recipes! Me and my girls tried the spicy shrimp. MMMMMMMM!!!! Very simple and dipping is fun. I altered it a little by using frozen cooked shrimp and only 1 stick of butter- gonna use jumbos next time. The pico de gallo looks good,...

Grocery underdog store Aldi sells wine. Not quite to the extent of my favorite discount wine spot, Trader Joe’s as far as selection, but here’s the inside scoop from their buyer.
(I hear Trader Joe’s in Northville (8 & Haggerty) has better ambiance than the Royal Oak spot. I am that curious.)

THEY CAN MAKE SANDWICHES
Eph McNally’s Deli is a cozy place to eat. The crew has been keeping lunch’n'munchers satisfied for over 10 years.
At the Porter Street location, the 32″ TV played video that was piped through speakers overhead, nestled at the end of shelves housing old-school lunch boxes.
I had the Trumbell- pastrami, slaw, Russian...

The fam went to Petoskey to squeeze in one last ski trip before the spring thaw. We stayed at the Baywinds Inn for a reasonable price. It was close to everything- 5 minutes from downtown, 15 minutes from Harbor Springs, 20 minutes from Nub’s Knob and Boyne Highlands.
Petoskey has been called the “Birmingham of...

I bought a bottle of La Bocca Cabernet Sauvignon at Trader Joe’s last week. This rich red was under $5 and surprisingly flavorful. I cannot describe wine in that snooty lingo about depth and body. But a swish amongst my pallette did leave a lasting impression. That’s good!
Here is another wine list I found...

I love wine.
I am especially fond of reds. I find a Shiraz is smoother than a Merlot. A good Chilian has a nice zest. I don’t try to be all classy with my favorite grapes. I am learning by experience and a little reading, but am mostly letting my palate decide.
There are many grape...
